Photographing The ROOTS - 4.25.2011

I’ve had the honor of working with The Roots numerous times over the years. One of my favorite portrait sessions of all time took placed on E 19th Street in NYC, a few weeks before the release of their 7th studio album Game Theory. The music defines my hometown city of Philadelphia and I’m proud to own every album on vinyl, including many singles and rarities. In tribute, I’ve compiled outtakes dating back to my first shoot with Questlove in 2000, shot with a Nikon F5 and Fuji NPH. At the time I was working at a camera store when I got the call from City Paper art director Brian Hogan. Trevor Dixon, the assigned photographed was in a fender bender and they needed someone to drop everything and shoot the music issue cover. I told my boss there was an emergency and I had to go. Soon after I was hired full time as the City Paper staff photographer.
