“Starman” at the Tower Theater, Philadelphia, October 21st, 2002 - 1.11.2016

My friend Chandler broke the terrible news to me that Bowie died from an 18 month long battle with Cancer. Man, was it really 14 years ago that I saw him at the Tower Theater in Philly? Music Editor Pat Rapa asked me to photograph the show for The Philadelphia City Paper. At the time we had just switched from film to digital and I was shooting with the Nikon D1X, a 5.3 megapixel camera that had a list price of $5,130 (you can buy it on ebay now for $140). I came away with this image for the paper, but I came away with so much more internally. There’s no image that explains what it was like to listen to “Starman” up close and personal. You see, my son Aidan was 6 months in the womb and would arrive three months later on January 5th, 2003. There I was, listening to David Bowie singing:

There’s a starman waiting in the sky
He’d like to come and meet us
But he thinks he’d blow our minds
There’s a starman waiting in the sky
He’s told us not to blow it
‘Cause he knows it’s all worthwhile
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie.

I kept thinking about this baby boy that was about to blow our minds… I knew my life was about to change forever but I had no idea what to expect. Well, we celebrated Aidan’s 13th birthday this week and he’s still blowing my mind. “Starman” will forever remind me of that concert, that feeling, that realization. I can’t imagine life without my son. I will make sure he knows the impact Bowie’s music had on the world. And of course, I’ll tell him I was thinking about him at The Tower Theater on October 21st, 2002.

Emma & Kirby, Presqu’ile Provincial Park, Ontario Canada, Part 1 - 9.2.2015

I’m thrilled for my cousin Emma. She married Kirby Best, a great guy who she’s been with for like, ever. They had a beautiful day at Presqu’ile Provincial Park, located on the northern shore of Lake Ontario. Friends and family gathered from close and far to celebrate with them at the Presqu’ile Yacht Club. It was a true DIY effort as Emma and Kirby worked real hard making the experience beautiful for everyone. Gotta give a shout out to my cousin Jen Wardle, she did a killer job on the flowers and table settings. Emma and Kirby: thanks for bringing inspiring and wonderful people together. It was a beautiful day in many, many ways.

Vivek & Raveen’s Hindu Ceremony, SF, CA - 6.2.2015

I traveled to the Bay Area to photograph Vivek & Raveen’s beautiful Hindu ceremony in Palo Alto, followed by a reception in San Francisco. A hat tip goes to my old friend Sujith Kumar for recommending my photography to Vivek and Raveen. Having documented South Asian weddings in the past, I was reminded why I love these eastern traditions. Its hard to explain what it feels like to be at the center of such a powerful event, but what inspires me the most is the eclectic mix of color, light, spirituality, family and love. Thank you, Vivek & Raveen, for seeing value in what I do.

Alec Ounsworth, CYHSY Living Room Tour - 3.6.2015

Alec passed through Southern California en route to San Francisco as part of his “Clap Your Hands Say Yeah” living room tour. We had an inspiring catch up session followed by a shoot on the beach after sundown. Great to see an inspiring artist hard at work. The Long Beach show was an intimate, acoustic set for a great crowd.

Follow the living room tour here and check “Coming Down” off the new record Only Run. Enjoy:

PRIMER and the amazing design work they do - 7.15.2014

I’m humbled and honored to have met Brian Isserman. He’s an old school creative director who understands the modern digital landscape. He runs PRIMER, an awesome boutique branding + design agency based in Philadelphia. He’s hired me to shoot campaigns for his clients, yet we go back to coffee at Infusion on Germantown Ave. He was about to marry a kick ass artist and illustrator named Michele. Michele Melcher to be exact, you can see her work and participate in her amazing “Unselfie Project” right here (the project received national press). She rules, but I digress… They asked me to shoot their Halloween themed wedding in Bucks County, PA. We’ve been collaborating on great projects since. When I moved to LA and needed to rebuild, PRIMER designed a website, a portfolio, promotional materials, a poster. Beyond the awesome design though, Brian has become an amazing individual to collaborate with. PRIMER just launched a new website and our work is featured as a case study.

Here’s an 8×10 View Camera Portrait I made of Brian and his 1963 Mercury Meteor:

Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, Indio, CA - 4.22.2014

An estimated 90,000 people flocked to the barren Coachella Valley each day for the well known music explosion. The festival’s origins trace back to a 1993 concert that Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club while boycotting venues controlled by Ticketmaster. Now, the AEG owned company Goldenvoice runs the show and Coachella has become the most profitable music festival in the country. 184 artists were featured across stages and tents this year, congrats to all of them for performing their hearts out and keeping the music culture alive.

Kaiser & Jamilynn, Sun Valley, Idaho - 7.15.2013

I traveled to Sun Valley Idaho to see my old friend John Kaiser marry a wonderful woman named Jamilynn. It was wonderful to watch an old friend flourish in a great community. My wonderful friend Jesse Terry played acoustic guitar for the ceremony. I shot a few rolls of B&W through my Leica, I’ll post those later. Here’s some color outtakes. Congrats Johhny K & Jamilynn!
